Farewell to b.b.

Unfortunately 2009 was not a good year for b.b. We discovered this week that she was experiencing kidney failure and that there was nothing we could do to save her. We got her prognosis yesterday and on the same day had to make the tough decision to put her to sleep. Needless to say it was a horrible day for us and for b.b. She obviously was not feeling well and was deteriorating rapidly so I know it was the right decision, but we sure do miss her.

I feel like we've known b.b. since the very beginning of her life - literally. Her mother was a street cat that hung out at our first apartment out of college and Jeff and I saw b.b. being conceived when we were coming home from work one day. Julie Kuhnhein (Hewett at the time) took Mama cat in and cared for her during her pregnancy and then cared for b.b. and her brother/sister. b.b. came to live with Jeff and me in our new apartment in October of 2000 when she was 6 weeks old. We always joked that nature won out in the nature vs. nurture debate because no matter how kind we were to her, she had a defensive, protective nature that caused her to attack visitors to our house - namely Michael Wilson. My mom said (affectionately, of course) that she was almost more like an attack dog than a cat. However, she was nothing but sweet and wonderful to Jeff, me and Ben (well, Ben 98% of the time).

I thought I'd post some pictures of beebs from the past few years. I wish I could post some of her earlier pictures (before Ben came along we took tons of pics of her!), but alas we do not have a scanner.

b.b. helped us test out all of our baby gear before Ben arrived.

Once he did arrive they enjoyed napping together. Notice that b.b. got the more comfortable of the blankets.

Once Ben started rolling over b.b. grew concerned that he might continue to make improvements in the motion department.

This is how Ben gave b.b. hugs. He would make a high-pitched "aaaaah" sound along with the hug.

Happy 2009!

Happy new year to everyone! We celebrated new year's eve with the Wilson clan. To see pictures of Ben and Elise celebrating, go to www.elisewilson.blogspot.com.

Otherwise January has been fairly unventful thus far. We are getting back into our routine of school, play group and Friday classes at My Gym. Plus, Ben is counting down the days until his second birthday. For those of you who don't know, Ben is going to become a big brother in June and we'll find out if he's having a little brother or sister on January 27th.

Today we went to My Gym for a special Elmo Open House they were having. I don't know who they think they were fooling, but the red furry costumed creature didn't look very much like Elmo. And he didn't speak. He was a fake mute Elmo. Regardless, the children were very entertained by his appearance. I think Ben was a little disappointed. From this point on, I'll refer to him as Ellmo in case anyone from Sesame Street happens to read this blog!

Ellmo's big entrance. Some kids flocked to Elmo (see below) while others started to flee.

Elise was a huge fan!

Here's Ellmo giving a wave to Ben and Elise.

Nini finally talked Ben into giving Ellmo a fist bump.

Here's Elise planting a kiss on Ellmo's heart-shaped tongue.

Ben's 2nd Christmas

Let's see...where do I start? We took so many pictures over Christmas I can't decide which ones to post. We spent the week of Christmas in Ft. Thomas and Ben had a great time. He really got into opening presents so I'm sure he'll be a pro by the time his birthday rolls around. He also thoroughly enjoyed driving around looking at Christmas lights. Whenever he saw lights that were particularly pleasing he would say "oh, whoaaaaa." In addition to learning that expression, he picked up some new animal sounds, his grandfather taught him how to do a "fist bump." He enjoyed entertaining everyone with multiple sessions of twirling and somersaults.

He spent time with all of his Fritsche and Griffin relatives, including some real quality time with his favorite member of the family - Wickett. b.b. also made the trip with us, but I'm not sure if she made it into any of the pictures.
One of Ben's favorite activities was creating displays for Wickett to enjoy. This particular display included an assortment of wooden farm animals. As you can imagine, Wickett really liked this.
More Ben & Wickett quality time.

Maybe Wickett would like to smell my feet?

Trying to stay in shape over the holidays by doing some stretching.

Aunt Anne got me an awesome Thomas tent for Christmas.

Is that really Elmo?

It is Elmo!!

Getting into the Christmas Spirit

Since the weather in Charlotte isn't very Christmas-like we decided to be proactive and create our own Christmas spirit. We visited the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden for their holiday light display. We had never been there and it was beautiful. They also had some neat train displays. The Wilsons joined us there and Ben and Elise had a great time running around.

Waiting to see Santa.
Santa's not so bad I guess.

This is Mommy's favorite Christmas tree ever - it's covered with orchids.

Enjoying the Christmas lights - and each other.

Holiday Season

The holidays are officially here and that means lots of traveling for the Fritsche family. We went to Murray for Thanksgiving. Ben did great in the car and had a great time visiting family. He's getting his 2-year molars so that made sleep pretty non-existent while we were there. It was early-to-bed, early-to-rise for Mommy, Daddy and Grammy. We're talking 7 p.m. bedtimes for us all and 4:30 wake-ups! The time change didn't help much!

Grammy and Ben

Drinking orange juice sure is fun! On this particular morning Ben had just eaten some pancakes and Mommy had eaten about 25 country ham biscuits!
Daddy & Ben in Paducah next to a choo-choo train.

While in downtown Paducah we ran into Santa Claus. He gave Ben a candy cane. Ben wasn't quite ready to give him his list so we'll be visiting Santa again soon.

Back in Charlotte...checking out the singing Christmas bears exhibit in the Bank of America building.

Elise came to check out the bears too!

For some reason the mechanical bears needed to take a 15-minute break so Ben & Elise sat and chatted about the first part of the performance.

Dancing to some of the tunes.

What an adorable family! I mean, what an adorable set of neighbors!

Ghoulies & Goblins

Ben has been a busy little ghoulie. His second Halloween has been filled with festivities. On the 25th he hosted a Halloween Bash for some pals (and refused to wear his costume) and on Halloween he visited Daddy at work, attended a neighborhood party and visited a few of Mommy & Daddy's friends for trick-or-treat.

Ben's Halloween Bash. In this picture: Dog, Chicken, Tigger, Pirate & Ben is in the background with no costume on. Not pictured: Cowboy, Lion & Elephant.
In the lobby of Daddy's building. Still not certain about this costume thing. Not happy that Mommy safety-pinned it so he can't take it off.

Tired little teddy bear!
Halloween arts & crafts. Ben's favorite art materials: stickers.

b.b. decides to help with the arts & crafts.
